Our Programs
ARTSCO supports the development of art groups and organizations, sponsors many cultural events, and provides programs that support local arts organizations, and individual artists. ARTSCO is on top of current arts and cultural events in the Central Okanagan community, delves into special projects, stands up for members through advocacy, and supports local artists on their journey.
We are proud to present the following programs:
ARTS RESOURCE CENTRE AND OFFICE
The Arts Resource Centre contains the administrative and financial support for the Arts
Council, its members, and the public at large. The equipment and material within the centre
are accessible for research, project design, and the creation of promotional materials by
member artists. The Arts Resource Centre also contains bulletin boards and display racks for
members' informational material. Access to the internet is provided along with photocopy and
fax facilities at a nominal charge.
COMMUNITY BENEFITS:
The Arts Resource Centre is the heart of the organization, all programming and community
connection flows from it. The Arts Resource Centre has in effect become the "Chamber of
Commerce for the Arts", where community cultural information can be located.
The Resource Centre provides multi-level support to arts organizations, established and
emerging artists, which form a vital economical component in the local society.
ARTS ADVOCACY AND COMMUNICATIONS

Arts Advocacy: Over the years, the Arts Council has helped to establish many firsts in the
Central Okanagan Region by lobbying for arts programs at the Okanagan University College,
supporting the development of art groups and organizations, sponsoring many cultural events,
and nurturing municipal cultural policy to include a great regard for all of the above.
Communications: The program provides community information on the services that we offer to the community
and local artists. This is where to find the latest cultural events and discover the resources
that are available in the community that foster the arts. The program also mails out a weekly
email newsletter. The Arts Council of the Central Okanagan websites: www.okanaganarts.com
and www.artsco.ca receive over 1000 hits per week.
COMMUNITY BENEFITS:
Arts Advocacy and Communications Program is the virtual meeting place connecting the
community to the arts.
ARTSCAPE
» http://www.artsco.ca/community.php
The Artscape Program has been in existence since 1995 and is an effective and well used
program. The program provides artists with exhibition opportunities, sales venues, and
marketing opportunities, while enhancing the interiors of public buildings. Currently six public
venues feature different artists every two months: Kelowna Community Theatre, Okanagan
Regional Libraries in Kelowna and Westbank, Cottonwoods Extended Care Facility and finally
the Arts Resource Centre, are effective centers of exposure.
COMMUNITY BENEFITS:
The Artscape Program provides opportunity for our community to view art in public places;
it humanizes and enhances our public spaces. The Artscape Program also acts as an
educational tool to help further foster the value of our local community arts.
Artscape program provides emerging artists an avenue to expose their art in public places.
The program also provides a unique opportunity for the general public to view art at no
cost.
HONOUR IN THE ARTS
» http://www.artsco.ca/honour.php
The Honour in the Arts program consists of four components: Bursaries, Certificates of
Achievement to Schools within School District 23, Civic Awards for outstanding achievements
in the Arts, and the new Okanagan Arts Awards.
COMMUNITY BENEFITS:
The Honour in the Arts Program recognizes the importance the arts are in the development of
a community. The Honour in the Arts Program provides recognition for outstanding
achievement in the arts and provides acknowledgement from a recognized cultural
community leader. This acknowledgement nurtures and encourages the value that arts
bring to our society.
CO-SPONSORSHIP GRANTS
» http://www.artsco.ca/grants.php
The Arts Council of the Central Okanagan is always interested in supporting and fostering
original arts and cultural events in the Community. Each year the Arts Council of the Central
Okanagan provides financial support to individuals and artist organizations for community art
projects through the Co-sponsorship Grant Program. The grants are adjudicated on the basis
of need, originality of the project, and benefit to the arts community.
COMMUNITY BENEFITS:
The Co-sponsorship Grant Program provides financial support for innovative art projects which
benefit the community. Over the past 5 years, the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan
has invested over $20,000 into the community through the Co-sponsorship Grant Program.
OKANAGAN ARTS MAGAZINE
» http://www.okanaganarts.com
The Arts Council of the Central Okanagan launched a full-colour, high-quality, quarterly
magazine in mid-April 2007. Okanagan ARTS consists of articles, stories, and visual
presentations, celebrating the culture of our community and the artworks and artistic
performances that emerge from it.
Through showcases, profiles, backgrounders and other features, the magazine presents a rich
palette of voices, ideas, and interpretations and makes a critical contribution to the
understanding and appreciation of the arts, and their unique value and importance to the life
of our community. It provides coverage of every arts discipline in the Okanagan.
COMMUNITY BENEFITS:
The Okanagan ARTS magazine benefits the community through distribution of comprehensive
information about the arts in the Okanagan. It is a venue for the manifestation of the
vitality and progress of the arts in the region. The magazine encompasses a multitude of
arts, such as visual, literary, performing, and craft arts to create a complete picture of the
arts life.
OPEN STUDIOS
» http://www.okanaganarts.com/openstudios.php
The Open Studios is an extension to the Artscape Program, which provides
a unique opportunity to experience the diverse talent thriving in the community.
The program was so successful that the Arts Council will hold the event on a quarterly basis
in 2007. Open Studios 2007, will now be featured as a quarterly insert in the new Arts Council
magazine, Okanagan Arts.
This self-guided tour provides an excellent opportunity for the public to meet artists in their
working environments, learn about their creative processes, and purchase fine arts and crafts.
COMMUNITY BENEFIT:
Open Studios is an educational program. It provides an opportunity to learn the methods and
processes used in art work from the artists themselves.
The program also promotes appreciation of the process of creating art. Inspiration, learning,
and experience are some of the many great benefits of the Open Studios Program.
OKANAGAN ARTS DIRECTORY
» http://www.okanaganarts.com/directory.php
The Okanagan Arts Directory is a reference source. It includes individual artists and private
organizations and businesses in an effort to be as comprehensive as possible. Each listing
includes a description, activities and events, affiliations, addresses, telephone and fax
numbers, web and email addresses and other information users find helpful.
The information in the Okanagan Arts Directory has been compiled from existing data held by
the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan, verified and kept up to date through research using
the best available sources and through postings by individuals and organizations.
COMMUNITY BENEFITS:
The Directory serves the purpose of a bulletin board with information connecting local artists,
arts groups, art-related businesses and the private sector. It allows for everyone to be
updated and informed about the diversity of artists in the community.
OKANAGAN ARTS AGENDA
» http://www.okanaganarts.com/events.php
Every issue of Okanagan ARTS also presents a calendar of shows,
presentations and other events, which also are featured on the Okanagan ARTS' webpage.
The Okanagan ARTS magazine and the event page act as message boards, which inform the
public about the events and arts functions in the Okanagan.
COMMUNITY BENEFITS:
The Arts Council of the Central Okanagan recognizes the value of communicating the on-going arts events in the community.
Artists need promotion in order to share their inspiration with the public, and the public on the
other hand needs to be informed about events and arts functions.
Communication brings the artists and the public together and the events calendar plays a
major role in it.
