The GPS Margaret Averill

My husband, Dennis, purchased a new GPS . He took it in the car on a road trip to Armstrong, BC with our friends Maxine and Mike. Maxine and I sat in the back. Dennis drove and Mike a former air force instrument technician sat in the passenger's seat, fascinated with and playing with the shiny device.

"It even has maps on it!" he explained. "You have to put in the way points, I guess." He positioned it on the dash after the men obtained some special tape at the Canadian Tire Store in Kelowna to make it stick.

"It will help us to get to Armstrong," Dennis said. We were going the back way.

Mike kept pushing buttons on the GPS and he and Dennis continually checked the altitude. Maxine and I rode and talked, paying little attention to the GPS information that was being discussed in the front seat.

After a time, Mike announced that Armstrong was on the horizon. Maxine and I were ready to stop for a coffee. When we entered the town, Maxine got a strange look on her face. She looked around intently. "My God, this place has really changed since I was here last!"

"When was that?" I questioned.

"Last month! I come to the chiropractor here every month."

"Really!" I said.

We came to the downtown section and there was a sign, "Welcome to Salmon Arm."

The GPS not only gives you the altitude, the direction you are heading and maps, but also, it transforms towns!

Margaret Averill has written several poems for the primary classroom which are now transferred into songs on CDs, "Buttered Popcorn"," From Brendon's Heart"," I Just Want to Tell You" and "Goofy Goose". She has produced as well, Lullabies for Babies entitled, "Once Upon A Rhyme" and singing games for toddlers called, "Rock, Tickle, Bounce and Rhyme". Her CDs are available at Sage Books, the library and at Mosaic Books. She is now writing short stories.
