The Okanaganís finest of the arts world were honoured during Friday nightís 2008 Okanagan Arts Awards at UBC Okanagan.

The awards were presented by the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan to distinguished artists, supporters and contributors who exemplify excellence in the arts in music, dance, theatre, literary, visual arts, design, media and arts educator.

ìIts extremely important to the arts in the Okanagan Valley that we support all forms of arts, our brothers and sisters in all the different art forms. Its good to network, its good to meet them, its good to see them,î said Cameron Gordon, a member of Shakespeare Kelowna, which won the theatre award.

The ceremony highlighted the unique and diverse excellence of Okanagan artists through each of their significant achievements, especially those of Daphne Odjig, who received the Lifetime Achievement award for her outstanding contributions to the arts community.

ìI am very, very honoured, especially to be honoured close to home,î said Odjig, who was appointed Laureate in Visual Arts by Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean in 2007. îEver since I was a little tad, I always said I was born with a paint brush in my hand. Itís very satisfying.î

Odjig is also a member of the Order of Canada, a member of the Order of British Columbia and holds five honorary doctorates from universities - Okanagan University College (2001) and Thompson Rivers University (2007).

ìEvery honour is special; itís always special,îÄù said Odjig.

Through the awards, the Arts Council enriches the cultural life in the Okanagan by supporting the development of individual artists and art groups. Along with the award presentations, the night was awarded with the talent of the community through vignettes of work by nominees.

Among others, both Shakespeare Kelowna and Ballet Kelowna took to the stage for performances that reinforced the influence and skill the arts have within Kelowna and the Okanagan.

The Arts Council was originally founded in 1953, and soon became recognized as the most culturally active organization in the area. Although it struggled with financial difficulties and insufficient funds over the past 54 years, it has survived and evolved into an integral part of the Okanagan community. It also continues to fill the immense need to foster and develop the arts in education and community.

ìI am very grateful because this is my community and this is where I pour as much as I can of my own love of the arts, I put into this community and itís such a feeling of gratitude to receive this beautiful award,î said Rhonda Draper, who won the award for Arts Educator. ìThis is where I have grown as an artist myself, so itís just that much deeper and more rooted. It has been my playground of music and art and dance and drama myself growing up as a student. So to be awarded in the community where I am working with students myself, itís just a full circle.î
